Going to Theatre for the First Time?

Everything you were afraid to ask. No judgment.

The short version: Show up a few minutes early, silence your phone, don't take photos during the show, and clap when other people clap. That's genuinely it. Everything else is details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a play and a musical?
A musical has songs — usually a lot of them — that carry the story forward. A play is all spoken dialogue. Both can be funny, sad, serious, or light. Neither is inherently more "serious" or "highbrow" than the other.
What should I wear?
Whatever you'd wear to a nice dinner. Smart casual is completely fine at most Las Vegas theatres. You don't need a suit or a gown. You also don't need to show up in jeans if you don't want to. Just look intentional.
Can I use my phone?
Before the show and at intermission: yes. During the show: no. This means photos too — the flash and the screen are both disruptive to other audience members and to the performers. Silence it before you sit down.
When do I clap?
At the end of songs (in musicals), at the end of scenes if something is genuinely impressive, and definitely at the end of the show — the "curtain call" is when the cast takes their bows. If you loved something, a standing ovation is always appropriate and always appreciated.
What if I need to leave during the show?
Wait for a scene break if at all possible — you'll feel it when the energy pauses. Try to exit from the aisle seat side. Intermission (usually about 45 minutes in) is the natural break point for anything non-urgent.
How do I get cheap tickets?
Rush: Day-of tickets at a discounted price, usually sold at the box office when it opens (often 10am). You have to show up in person. Best for flexibility. Lottery: Enter online, find out if you won the morning of the show. Usually the cheapest option. Student discounts: Valid student ID, day of show. Group discounts: Usually 10+ people. We note all available deals in every review.
How long is the show?
We include running time in every review. Most full-length shows are 2–3 hours including a 15-minute intermission. Shows under 90 minutes usually run without intermission.
Is it okay if I cry?
Yes. Lots of people do. Good theatre is supposed to move you.
